Before I begin, let me explain that I do not like the 49ers as a fan. I do not like them at all. I grew up in the 90s when the best NFC rivalry was the Cowboys and 49ers, so I grew up hating the 49ers. The early 2000s did nothing to quell that hatred with the famous Terrell Owens star-celebration and the ensuing George Teague leveling of T.O. Complete side-note: the football in my picture is signed by George Teague; it is my favorite piece of Cowboys paraphernalia. Anyway, back on point, the past few years have seen the 49ers go from a joke to arguably the best team in the NFC. I am proud to say that, while I do not root for them, I totally one-upped Dylan in that knowledge. The 49ers have made me look really smart when it comes to football, and for that, I thank them and respect them.
The key to the 49ers winning the past few weeks has been the re-emergence of Michael Crabtree. I will admit, I was skeptical of 2 things regarding Crabtree: (1) his skill and importance to the offense and (2) his ability to come back this season with an Achilles tendon tear. I really didn’t think he’d be able to come back in any capacity, much less such as effectively as he has played. Consider this: he only played 5 games in the regular season and got the 3rd most yards of 49ers receivers in only 19 receptions. 13 of his 19 receptions were 1st downs. That is an enormous impact in a very short time. He had over 120 yards against the Packers, and as soon as the Panthers decided to shut him down, that allowed Boldin to have a huge game. Now, let’s say the Seahawks can shut doth of them down. Well, that’s why you’ve got Vernon Davis. Add those weapons to the running threat of the Gore/Kaep tandem, and the Seahawks will not have a fun day on defense.
The Seahawks offense is lethargic at best. I have no faith
in them doing anything against the 49ers defense. That defense of the 49ers is
much tougher and much more solid than the Saints, and the Saints defense was no
slouch. The weakness of the Saints defense, the rushing defense, is a huge
strength of the 49ers. Lynch will not have the field day he had against the
Saints last week, and this will force Russell to do what he can’t do very well:
pass. The fact that Harvin is out doesn’t actually mean much for the Seahawks
as he has been in two games, including the playoffs. Talk about a waste of money.
Good gravy. What it DOES mean is that the 49ers have one less playmaker to
worry about on the Seahawks offense. I can guarantee one thing about this game:
it will NOT be the blowout of week 2. This will be a hard-nosed, hard-fought,
defensive game. I just believe the 49ers will come out on top.
On a final note, while I totally don't like the 49ers, I totally hate the Seahawks. It is not because of any single player, but because I think Pete Carroll is the worst kind of dirty, slime-ball cheater. He cheated at USC, and his punishment was... a pay raise, a team built around his preferences, and absolutely no justice whatsoever. I can't stand him, and I relish every single failure that goes his way.
Prediction:
49ers 17
Seahawks 14
Adendum: I totally forgot! The whole reason I wanted to write about the 9ers is to boast about my existence as a good luck charm! Everytime I start watching them, they somehow start remembering how to play correctly. It has happened 3 weeks in a row, so I'm hoping it works out this week, too.
